Cleaning your Bike
Cleaning Your Bike
A clean bike is a fast bike – we can’t stress this enough! Keeping your bike clean is not only beneficial for the lifespan and performance of its components, but it also boosts your morale. A clean bike rides better and lasts longer, making your cycling experience more enjoyable.
Why Clean Your Bike?
Rinsing or even wiping your bike down after every ride can significantly extend its life. This is especially crucial during winter or after wet, muddy rides. Allowing grime and dirt to accumulate can lead to wear and tear on your bike’s surfaces and components.
Essential Tools for the Job
To get started, gather the following tools: a garden hose or a water bucket, bike cleaning agents or a mild detergent, sponges and brushes, clean towels, bike chain lubricant, and optionally, silicone spray or another suitable after-wash spray for your bike's finish.

Bike Washing Guide
1. Preparation: Find an open outdoor area where you can make a bit of a mess. If you have a bike stand, use it to make reaching tight spots easier.
2. Initial Rinse: Rinse your bike down with clean water. Pro tip: If you don’t have a hose, your water bottle can work just as well. For a more thorough clean, consider checking out our article on Cleaning & Maintaining Your Drivetrain.
3. Apply Cleaner: Spray bike cleaner over the entire bike, focusing on the dirtiest areas. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes to break down the grime.
4. Scrubbing: Use a sponge for delicate areas and brushes for stubborn spots, especially around the drivetrain where dirt tends to accumulate.
5. Final Rinse and Dry: Rinse off all soap residue and dry your bike with clean towels. For best results, let it sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes to ensure it dries completely.
6. Lubrication: Once your bike is clean and dry, apply bike chain lubricant to the chain and wipe off any excess. Remember, do NOT lubricate brake components like pads, rotors, or rims, as this can lead to noise and inefficiency.
7. Finishing Touches: Use silicone spray on your frame to maintain its finish. If you ride a mountain bike, apply it to the stanchions and dropper post to lubricate and condition the seals.
8. Check Tire Pressure: Finally, check your tire pressure and inflate if necessary.
By following these steps, you’ll keep your pride and joy in tip-top condition. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us. Happy riding!
